A story of one boy empowered by creativity

Written by Scott Mikesh, Executive Director

This season, one of our 3rd grade Art Buddies boys is on the autism spectrum. He had a really hard time focusing and opening up to his Art Buddy at the start, but his mentor Stuart Wainstock did a wonderful job working with him -- being patient, and helping him express his ideas however he wanted.

Rather than building a costume, Stuart and his little buddy built a bright red abstract 3-D dinosaur. On its back were a bunch of tiny animals that needed protection.

The program ended as usual with kids and mentors presenting their creations to the whole group. The most amazing thing to witness is when an otherwise timid and uncertain child shines with pride and confidence like this boy did, talking about his work in front of a group of 60+ people -- smiling the entire time.

It's moments like this that reveal the empowering and inspiring impact of creative mentoring.

Art Buddies voted among top five charities in Minneapolis!

Readers of Minneapolis Happening Magazine recently voted for the "Best of 2015" in several categories, including best Charity. We're excited to announce that Art Buddies was nominated and voted as a Finalist among the top five charities for the 2015 Minneapolis Happening List.

This wonderful recognition is a result of all who keep Art Buddies going and growing each year -- the amazing mentors who share their time and talents with the children we serve, our staff and board members who provide leadership and support, and our generous donors and program partners who make it all possible.

Thank you!

What experts say about Art Buddies

The people who work with the kids every day — their teachers, supervisors and parents — confirm the positive impact of Art Buddies. Over the years, here is what they’ve told us:

Art Buddies empowers kids.

Teachers tell us that by forming a positive relationship with a creative mentor, someone who nurtures their spirits, the kids experience a big boost in self-esteem.

Davonte, a boy with a rough home life and no dad, had not worked or cooperated in school for 2 years. His teacher was amazed to see his transformation in Art Buddies, to watch him bond with his mentor and feel joy and pride in his achievement.

LaKeisha, a homeless, depressed girl, got her spirit back after being in Art Buddies. She was paired with a wonderful mentor who made her smile again. She told her teachers how much she loved Art Buddies, how it helped her feel more cheerful and confident.

Art Buddies motivates kids to learn.

One father told us, “Before Art Buddies, my boy got 2’s and 3’s on his spelling tests. After Art Buddies, he got 12’s. He felt so proud of himself in your program, he started trying harder in school!”

A teacher said, “At Art Buddies, every child is successful. For some, it’s the first time they know what success feels like. They want more of that feeling, so they work harder in school to get it.”

Art Buddies increases school attendance.

Our program is so popular with students, school attendance goes UP on Art Buddies days. One teacher said, “All week long, the kids talked about how excited they were to see their Art Buddy again.”

The After-School coordinator told us we had the highest attendance rate of all her programs — which is rare for a group as large as ours.

Art Buddies improves behavior and social skills.

Teachers repeatedly warned us about problem behavior with their kids. Then, during Art Buddies, they were astounded to see huge improvement in their students’ conduct.

“Kids who were having a horrible day—-cussing, wrestling, goofing off—-suddenly changed at the door to Art Buddies. I think it’s the one-on-one attention. They really need that,” said one teacher.

Art Buddies helps kids plan ahead and stay on task.

Teachers report that students gain valuable life-skills in Art Buddies by learning to create and execute a plan, and by learning to focus on a task over a long period of time.

“Most of these kids don’t know how to do that,” one teacher told us. “The goal-setting and execution skills they develop in Art Buddies can help them succeed in life.”

Art Buddies introduces kids to creative careers.

Teachers know the value of expanding a child’s view of their future. Most of the kids have no idea that the TV ad they’re watching, or the logo on their sneakers, represents a JOB. Our mentors show the kids it’s possible to make a good living by being creative.

How would you describe Art Buddies to someone who has never heard of the program?
Art Buddies is an amazing mentor program that pairs creative professionals one–on-one with elementary school kids for an 8-week art program that boosts self-esteem, imagination and creativity… for both the kids and the mentors!

What advice would you give to a rookie Art Buddies volunteer?
Learn from your kid! Admittedly, there are a few “Type A” personalities in the creative field, and it’s easy to want to “direct and perfect” the project you are working on with your child. But the fun part for me is letting the kids direct you - their passion and excitement build something you would have never dreamed of.

Define what one-on-one mentoring means to you and how it can impact the lives of children.
Being able to work with a child one-on-one is unique in that you get to really learn about who they are and - most importantly - really listen to them. I think it means a lot to a child to be able have an adult’s undivided attention and get to ‘run the show’ on the project. It shows them how much their ideas matter, and that they are being heard.

How do you feel the after-school combination of creativity and mentoring helps children in school?
Art Buddies helps kids feel empowered and confident in themselves. This goes well beyond the art project, and we see them feeling more confident and excited in school.

While you were sharing knowledge with your Art Buddy, did you ever find they were teaching you something equally important? If so, what?
Always. It is a reminder to let go, dream a little wilder, think outside the box… and create without overthinking. They have no design rules or preconceived notions of what a costume should look like; they just let loose with their ideas and a glue gun and go for it. It’s quite liberating.

Art Buddy Spotlight: Anna Thompson, Mentor/Advisory Board Member

Anna Thompson has enjoyed being an Art Buddies mentor and Advisory Board member for eight years (and counting!). Outside of Art Buddies she puts her creative talents into motion at Socially Smitten as a Social Marketing Account Manager and Illustrator.

What has been your most memorable Art Buddies experience?
Two years ago, I recruited my mom, a former art teacher and designer, to volunteer with Art Buddies. She hasn’t taught art in a long time, and she totally enjoyed it! Not only did she have fun with the kids, but it was a great bonding experience for us too.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Art Buddies?
I volunteered with Art Buddies back in 2007. At the time, I was still trying to figure out what exactly I was going to do for a “career." Art Buddies helps kids AND adults foster their creativity. Not long after that, I started my own Etsy business that I still have today.

Define what one-on-one mentoring means to you and how it can impact the life of a child.
Volunteering with Art Buddies has been incredibly rewarding. I have seen the difference one-on-one mentoring can make in a child’s life. Many of the kids in the Art Buddies program don’t get the chance to have an adult all to themselves, and I think they really crave that attention and need it to thrive. I love devoting a couple hours a week to one special kid and really letting them know that this is THEIR time.

How do you feel the after-school combination of creativity and mentoring helps children with schoolwork?
From a personal experience, when I set aside time to be creative, it sparks creativity in other facets of my life too. Volunteering at Art Buddies mid-week revitalizes me and gets my creative juices flowing – those creative juices then spill back into my work and I feel renewed. I can only imagine that the same thing happens for our little Art Buddies.

Have you gained new friendships or expanded your network as an Art Buddy?
I have definitely met some cool cats volunteering with Art Buddies. It’s always fun running into them at events (whether it’s an advertising convention, an art festival, or even just out and about!). I’ve found that my wealth of Art Buddies friends has grown considerably over the past years. It’s a great community.

How would you describe Art Buddies to someone who has never heard of the program?
Art Buddies is a one-on-one after-school mentoring program that allows you to step away from grownup meetings and emails and into the world of kids one day a week. You and your buddy will go from ideation to working concept in a matter of 8-10 weeks. Be prepared to get messy and have fun.

What has been your most memorable experience as an Art Buddies mentor?
My second semester with Art Buddies was pretty great. My buddy came to the first session with a stack of books (he had participated previously) and wanted to sketch ideas immediately. We must have spent two sessions researching and prototyping before even cutting a piece of cardboard. By the end of the semester, my buddy had created an extremely elaborate storyline about a wizard who befriended little creatures in the forest. His costume and accessories reflected the awesomeness.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Art Buddies?
I did my undergrad in Elementary Education and taught kindergarten for five years. When I moved to Minneapolis, I missed working with kids, and Art Buddies filled the void perfectly. The blend of creative mentoring and after-school education make coming back each semester feel like the first day of school. Being able to play with glitter and sparkles was also pretty appealing.

What advice would you give to rookie Art Buddies mentors?
Let your little buddy run the show. Be there as a facilitator/guide and let your buddy take it from there. No matter how much you want the costume to be your marvelous and amazing creation, let it come from your buddy, and it will be that much more meaningful.

How do you feel the after-school combination of creativity and mentoring helps children with schoolwork?
One of the best things about the combination is the spectrum of grownup buddies that participate in the program. From architects and real estate agents to art directors and industrial designers, kid buddies get first-hand insight into what it means to be creative in the work place. Students start to see how different elements of their school work can be applied in a creative way, and that helps to breakdown some of the stigmas of that school work. Helping to raise awareness of all the different ways someone can be creative helps put things in a different lens.

How would you describe Art Buddies to someone who has never heard of the program?
Art Buddies pairs creative-minded adults with 8-11 year old inner-city kids one afternoon a week for a couple of months in a large group school-based setting. During this time, we build an aspirational costume together and develop a one-on-one relationship for a child who may rarely experience it.

Why did you decide to become active with Art Buddies?
Art Buddies is a personal alternative to my professional volunteering roles. As a marketing business owner, I am heavily involved in AIGA, the professional association for design: I hold a chapter board position, am a past president and a Fellow, and I serve on multiple committees. Those activities directly enhance my professional experience. Art Buddies allows me to enhance my personal side: The program teaches me about the multicultural flavor of our community… the need under-privileged kids have for a caring adult in their lives… the beauty that can arise in the simplest shared activity.

What advice would you give to rookie Art Buddies?
I recommend adult Art Buddies let their child take the lead. As a parent who offered my own children more guidance than they probably appreciated, I definitely follow my young buddy’s directions. That’s what the kids love most—the chance to be listened to, respected, and honored for their ideas. If my buddy asks me for advice or struggles to construct something or make a decision, I definitely help. But most children are definitive about their vision and they show me how to create it!

Tell us about a unique or interesting experience with your Art Buddy that inspired you.
Some of the children are quiet, reserved, and timid. It can take a few sessions to make a connection. One such girl, Shaunna, shared few words with me, but she chose them well; I could see her mind working. She carried a set of colored markers in an artists’ case to our first session. When I asked about them, she said her relatives “commission” her to do artwork. Another student came by and asked politely to borrow a marker. Shaunna told me that was her twin sister Shannon, one of her 20 siblings! During the second session, Shaunna sketched an idea for her costume right away, but couldn’t tell me who or what the character was meant to be. I asked, is it an artist or someone she knew, like a friend or cousin? Her eyes lit up and she said, “It’s my mom!” At the end of the third session, Shaunna had already left and I was heading out of the school to my car. Suddenly, I heard a tiny voice coming from a truck across the street. “Goodbye, Heather!” I knew I’d formed a link with Shaunna.

Have you gained new friendships or expanded your network with adult Art Buddies during the program?
A few years ago, one of my adult Art Buddies tablemates and I became friendly quickly. She had to miss a session or two so I filled in for her, and she was looking for career guidance, so we met outside of the program. I became her unofficial design mentor and our friendship blossomed. I ended up attending her wedding, visiting the house they bought, and watching her new career grow! This past spring, I had fun getting to know numerous new adult buddies…an advertising copywriter, a few agency art directors, a product designer, an in-house marketing coordinator, a web designer, a sound engineer, a real estate agent, a design freelancer, and graphic design students. Talk about a networking opportunity!

What are some of your favorite costume creations and what inspired your Art Buddy to choose that costume?
1) Alani as “Persimmon Princess,” based on a photo we discovered in a book combined with plastic fruit and leaves I found in my “basement treasure box.” 2) Ayana as “Queen of England,” influenced by flowing, gauzy and satin pink fabrics that became a dress. 3) Shaunna as “My Mother at Age 10,” designated by a black felt vest with gold buttons, a finger-knitted scarf, angel wings, and a staff festooned with ribbons.

Ad Fed celebrates trailblazer & Art Buddies founder Sue Crolick on June 25, 2015!

The Advertising Federation (Ad Fed) of Minnesota invites you to a MAD/AD/BASH on Thursday, June 25, featuring a presentation by the dynamic Sue Crolick, Minneapolis' first female art director and founder of Art Buddies.

Sue started her advertising career in the MadMen era (and knows all about those 3-martini lunches). She was the first female art director at two of Minneapolis’ largest ad agencies and won the top awards in her industry, including Golds from the One Show and New York Art Directors Club, Best of Shows and the Silver Medal from Ad Fed MN, plus features in Communication Arts and Graphis.

Sue will tell what it was like to be a female in the male-dominated ad world, what happened after her agency burned down, and how much fun she had making ads for creative people. See how a failed romance led her to start her own advertising and design business, and how a major illness inspired her to start Art Buddies, a nonprofit helping kids in need by matching each child with their own creative mentor. Enjoy great stories from one of Minneapolis’ most unique creatives.

After Sue’s talk, party with the Twin Cities’ original MADMEN&WOMEN. Drink Martinis or Manhattans, enjoy swanky hors d’oeuvres, and go MAD with your evening attire! Also featured “The Show” winners that won at the National AAF ADDY competition.

Art Buddy Spotlight: Katie Tholke, Intern

Meet Katie Tholke, the Art Buddies Intern for our spring 2015 semester.

Katie Tholke with one of our Art Buddies students.
How did you get connected with Art Buddies?
I found this awesome opportunity to intern for Steph and Scott through St. Catherine University in St. Paul. I’m currently a junior in the Financial Economics program, minoring in Business Administration. St. Catherine’s was awarded a grant through Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation that provided paid work experience with local non-profits, including Art Buddies!

What do you do as an intern for Art Buddies?
I’m currently working on finishing up several projects at our downtown office hosted at Carmichael Lynch, in addition to the time I spend helping with programs at our partnering schools. One project is researching and reaching out to past Art Buddies students who are now adults, to see what they’re up to today and how Art Buddies impacted their lives. I’ve also been chipping away at updating our contact list. Most recently, I have been requesting donations from local businesses for prize drawing items for our Letter-Palooza fundraiser in May. So far we have tickets for several awesome theaters and the Walker Art Center, some locally roasted coffee beans, and gift cards to some great restaurants. You'll have to attend Letter-Palooza to check it out: http://www.artbuddies.org/fundraisers/

How would you describe Art Buddies to someone who has never heard of the program?
Art Buddies is a one-on-one arts mentoring program that serves lower income neighborhoods with free after-school programs.

What has been your most memorable experience with Art Buddies?
Finding out that Jesus Barrera was a former Art Buddy through my research, and that he works at Bancroft! I’ve also gotten the chance to hop in a couple of times when an adult buddy has been absent or we’ve had a shortage of mentors for whatever reason. This has given me the understanding and appreciation for what our volunteers do every week.

Why did you decide to become active with Art Buddies?
Art Buddies is a great combination of many things I love; non-profits, arts, and mentoring. I have a background in architecture from the University of Minnesota, and even though I’m not pursuing that career path now, I definitely still enjoy spending time creating. Art Buddies seemed like the perfect organization to see what working at a non-profit would be like, which is my ultimate goal.

What advice would you give to rookie Art Buddies volunteers?
Be flexible; you never know what kind of costume your buddy might like. You’re there for guidance and support!

How do you feel the after-school combination of creativity and mentoring helps children with school work?
I think getting to know their adult buddies and what they do in their jobs is important for kids to see how their hard work at school can pay off in their future. Not all children have the opportunity to know creative professionals in their personal lives, or know how important school is for their future.

Tell us a unique or interesting Art Buddies experience that inspired you.
I love how the child I got to work with didn’t have fear of starting a project like I do! She just went for it and cut into the fabric, while I might take a lot longer to get the same results.

I also learned not to be afraid to express yourself; the kids combined many of their interests into one costume. I don’t think even as a kid I would have been as openly creative as so many of them are. I would have been afraid of looking silly or not fitting in, so I definitely learned something from the confidence they build at Art Buddies.

Art Buddy Spotlight: Jesus Barrera, Student Alumnus, Monitor and Mentor

A wonderful story to help celebrate our 20th year that seems too perfect to believe...

At each Art Buddies program, we work with school staff to help monitor each session and fill in for missing volunteers when needed. Sometimes our school helpers volunteer themselves to be creative mentors as well.

For the past two seasons, Jesus Barrera has been our school staff assistant at Bancroft Elementary School, helping monitor Art Buddies sessions and even being a creative mentor for one child last fall.

What's even more special about Jesus is that he was actually an Art Buddy himself when he was a student at Whittier International Elementary School back in 1999-2000! After 15 years, we are so fortunate to have Jesus back working with us, and even volunteering as an Art Buddies mentor. What a wonderful way to celebrate turning 20!

Doug Knutson is the owner of Knutson Photography, LLC, and he has generously donated his time and talents as an Art Buddies photographer since we opened our creative doors 20 years ago. Every season, Doug is there to capture memories of children building dreams during Art Buddies creating sessions, and takes special care during our mentor and mentee photo shoots on the last day of each program. He attends all of our volunteer networking and fundraising events, contributing to the energy and excitement as an active attendee and event photographer. You'll see many of Doug's photos on our website, Facebook page, and Buddy Blog. It is truly the creative spirit of people like Doug who have helped Art Buddies last and make such a meaningful difference in the lives of kids and mentors for 20 years. (Thanks Doug!)

How would you describe Art Buddies to someone who has never heard of the program?
Art Buddies is a one-on-one creative mentoring program.

What has been your most memorable experience as an Art Buddies volunteer?
A student asked to take my picture. A short time later a magazine I photographed an assignment for asked for a portrait of me for their contributor’s page, so I cropped the photo he took and submitted it to the magazine. He got credit in the magazine and I made sure he received a copy of the magazine. He was an Art Buddy the next session and took more pictures with my camera of the other participants.

Why did you decide to become active with Art Buddies?
As a way to give back to the community.

What advice would you give to rookie Art Buddies?
Just jump in and be yourself!

Have you gained new friendships or expanded your network with adult Art Buddies during the program?
I have gained many new friendships and clients. I recently worked with Art Buddies volunteer and Advisory Board member Gerry Yumul on a project for the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation.

Art Buddies kicks off 2015 with advances toward expansion!

President/Executive Director

As we gear up to start recruiting mentors for spring Art Buddies in Minneapolis, we're excited to report great strides toward expanding Art Buddies to St. Paul this year. Prospective schools are now being vetted to identify the most suitable St. Paul program partner for our fall 2015 season, to be announced this spring. Special thanks to Program Director, Stephanie Vagle, and members of our Advisory Board for researching and working with those in the St. Paul school district who helped us identify potential program partners.

While there is no shortage of children who could benefit from Art Buddies, our charitable mission is to provide an empowering arts learning and creative enrichment experience for kids who might not otherwise have the means or access to art programs.

Art Buddies activities also require sufficient space to host our large creating sessions that involve up to 80 people (up to 40 children working one-on-one with up to 40 creative adults). Long-term storage for our large collection of art supplies and creative works is also required. Fortunately, we have identified schools that could be a great fit, and are equally excited to offer Art Buddies after school for their 3rd-5th grade students next fall!

We are truly grateful for the hundreds of individuals, businesses and organizations that support Art Buddies each year, especially the many wonderful creative volunteers who provide the magic of mentoring by sharing their time and talents with kids who need them. Here's to another great year of empowering more underprivileged children to discover their creative potential!
